RAW file is when an image keeps most of the information from camera and isn't edited to fix or enhance the picture - sharpness and contrast, without processing and compressing. A RAW file needs to be changed to JPEG to make it more convenient for printing and sharing.
JPEG file is a commonly-used. It is processed and compressed by the device according to the settings made by the device user before the picture is taken. It is very common and can be easily opened in most computers.
These are two different pictures that I took in class last week. In the first picture the sky looks darker than in the second picture. This is because the ISO number and the amount of light that is let in while the picture is being taken. I used my Nikon D5500.
